The term laser light teeth whitening refers to a dental tooth whitening process where a special laser light is used to activate a bleaching gel (hydrogen-peroxide ) that has been brushed over the teeth. Laser Teeth Whitening systems require an expensive specially designed laser and can only be performed by a dentist in his/her office. Because of this controlled environment, the hydrogen-peroxide gel can safely have a much stronger concentration of hydrogen peroxide than at-home types of tooth whitening, and therefore potentially achieve better results.

Since excessive amounts of hydrogen peroxide left on teeth for too long can actually damage them, "at-home" systems are purposely "diluted". To compensate for this, at-home systems often require extended exposure time, or more frequent applications. At the very least, a professional treatment in a dental office will have immediate results, while home treatments may take weeks.

The term Laser whitening is occasionally misused when referring to a similar process of light-activated or blue light tooth whitening. While the concept and results are the same, the difference is just that the blue light is more like a small lamp, instead of using an actual laser. That is not to say that the results from a laser are necessarily better or worse than any of the several light-activating methods.
